Roopinder Singh is a writer first and foremost, whether through journalism, books, or the text that forms the basis of his public engagements. Born in 1960, he has lived in many cities—primarily Chandigarh, Patiala, Amritsar, Delhi, and New York. He grew up in a household that placed enormous emphasis on education and reading, and this inculcated a love of books in him from an early age.

Giani Gurdit Singh, Roopinder and his brother Ravinder Singh’s father, was a noted scholar, journalist, and religious institution builder. Their mother, Prof Inderjit Kaur, was a pioneering educationist and administrator. He remembers a remarkably “normal” household where the children were free to have fun, had plenty to eat, and were expected to contribute something sensible while conversing at the dinner table.

He studied in many schools in India, including St John’s High School, Chandigarh; St Francis High School, Amritsar; and Yadavindra Public School, Patiala, from where he earned his ‘O’ levels. He read Philosophy at St Stephen’s College, Delhi.

Chandigarh has been his home since 1990, it is also the city where he spent initial years of his life. Besides writing, Roopinder keeps busy with literary activities and speaking engagements. He acknowledges his wife, Jaspreet for giving him unconditional support and editorial insights during the writing process. His friends in the city have become the village that raises the manuscripts before they mature into books.
